Operational since 1930, the Aeri de Montserrat is a very scenic way to head to the top of Montserrat Mountain.
The Montserrat cable car travels just under 4,430 feet up the mountain at the rate of about 16 feet per second, for a total ride time of five minutes. The gradient is fairly steep.
The Aeri de Montserrat offers outstanding views over El Llobregat, Catalonia’s second longest river, as well as Monsitrol Village, the Santa Cova shrine, and the countryside.
The cable car has a maximum capacity of 35 passengers.

The Aeri de Montserrat Cable Car starts running at 9.30 a.m. year round, but ending times vary from 5.15 p.m. in the winter months (or 6.15 on weekends) to 7 p.m. from March to October.

Things to Know about taking the Aeri de Montserrat Cable Car
- Traveling to Montserrat from Barcelona by train? Be sure to alight at the Montserrat Aeri station in Montserrat instead of at the Monistrol de Montserrat station. It’s the first station.
- Arrived at the base of Montserrat Mountain by car and want to take the cable car up? You can park your car for free at the Aeri de Montserrat station.
- Once you arrive at the top of the mountain and alight from the cable car, there is a short walk to a set of stairs that will lead you to the monastery.
- If you want to avoid a long line for the cable car going up, plan to go early in the day or later in the afternoon.
- Towards the end of the day, the line for the cable car going down tends to get long, especially in busy season, so you may want to take the cable car up and the rack railway down if you plan to spend the full day at Montserrat.
