Sant Jeroni Montserrat offers spectacular views

Sant Jeroni Montserrat: Hike with Stunning Views!

Sant Jeroni is the highest point at Montserrat. The peak sits at 1,236 meters (about 4,055 feet) above sea level and you have to hike to get up to the summit.

Sant Jeroni is one of the most popular hikes in Montserrat Natural Park.

If you are an active visitor up for the challenge, the Sant Jeroni Summit Loop hike at Montserrat offers spectacular views.

While the Sant Jeroni hike is classed as moderate, there are some steep sections and steps.

You can either hike up from the monastery, or you can take the Sant Joan Funicular to the Plà de les Taràntules and start the hike from the upper station of the funicular. The latter option saves on effort by cutting down the elevation.

The Sant Jeroni hike offers sensational views en route. The trail winds its way through forest and scrub and there are several named viewpoints. You will also be close to some of the most iconic serrated cliffs at Montserrat.

At the Gorros, a group of four needle-like rock formations, stop to admire the view of the Sant Jeroni peak. La Gorra Frigia, topped by a cross, is the tallest of the four spires.

You will cross over the wooden footbridge that runs across the Santa Maria stream. A few minutes from the top, you will pass the Hermitage of Sant Jeroni.

From the viewing area at the top, on a clear day, you get 360-degree views: you can see the Pyrenees, nearby saw-toothed peaks, and the surrounding countryside below.

On the way down, take the path to Pla dela Ocells and back to the monastery for the loop, or retrace your steps.

The full loop trail, from the monastery, is about 10.5 kilometers (6.5 miles), and should take about 4 hours depending on stops and your pace. If you start from the funicular station, the length decreases to about 2.5 miles.

If you do not have the time to do the full loop, you can walk a part of the way from the funicular station and back: you will still get some gorgeous views.

From the monastery, the trail is very well marked, so you just have to follow the signs. You can also pick up a trail map at the information center at Montserrat Monastery.

Although the trail is generally well-maintained, you will want to wear good hiking shoes for grip. It is only partially paved and there are some rough sections. Bring poles if you find them helpful!

Wear sun protection, because a lot of the trail is exposed. Bring drinking water and snacks, and, of course, your camera or smartphone to capture photos and video of the views!
